A family tradition

  • Ferdinand Mathier

The family Mathier is first mentioned in Salgesch in a document dated 1387. For more than 600 years tradition and a history of wine making have linked us with this village. The foundation stone of the present wine business was laid by our great-grandfather Ferdinand Mathier. As a committed vineyard inspector he understood the importance of the nature and qualities of the soil, the location in which vines are planted and the micro-climate. It is essentially thanks to him that the Pinot noir is planted in the best locations in Salgesch, as is the old and venerable Cornalin. Up to the present time grandfather Oscar, father Adrian and now son Diego have acquired preferential locations in the Valais wine-growing region. We know how to profit from the rich variety of soils in the Rhone valley and attach great importance to the harmonious combination of putting the right sort of grape in the right place. With the passage of time about 25 hectares of outstanding Cru locations from Salgesch to Chamoson have become the property of the Mathier family.
