Alpenwild presents: Wine & Trail through the impressive Rhone Valley in Valais – a visit to Diego Mathier
Diego Mathier, winemaker with heart and soul, from the Salgesch winery Adrian & Diego Mathier Nouveau Salquenen likes to describe himself as a seller of emotions. His family comes from France and settled in Salgesch in the Rhone Valley in Valais at the end of the 14th century. Since then, the family history has been inextricably linked to viticulture in and around Salgesch. Diego Mathier himself is now a fourth-generation winegrower. It was his grandfather, Oskar Mathier, who was the first to sell wine in barrels and his father, Adrian Mathier, who then bottled wine and offered it for sale. The vision of the three-time best Swiss winemaker of 2018, 2011 and 2007 is to give people pleasure and enjoyment with his wine. The credo of his work: to create the perfect wine for the perfect moment of pleasure. The successful winemaker always likes to say with a smile that he grew up with his nose in the wine. Wine has therefore inevitably become his passion, although he admits that his wife played the most important role in his life at the beginning of his career as a winemaker. Now, however, it is his wife and wine that fill his life every day. See for yourself and visit the Mathier family at their vineyard in Salgesch. Bring enough time with you – a wine tasting takes time and, in addition to the winery, the fine Barrique “Wine & Raclette” restaurant awaits you for a culinary refreshment with regional specialties as well as the successful winemaker’s BnB Vino Veritas, in case you want to postpone your trip home indefinitely after so many impressions of pleasure.
