The most important facts at a glance
After Cornalin, the Humagne Rouge grape is the second largest and most important red grape variety in Valais.
The Humagne Rouge and Humagne blanc grape varieties sound identical in name.
However, they are not genealogically related.
In fact, DNA analyses carried out in 1999 proved that the red grape variety is genetically identical to the Cornalin d’Aoste variety.
This is cultivated in the Aosta Valley in Italy. The Humagne Rouge grape is an autochthonous grape variety from the Italian-Swiss Alpine region.
The Humagne Rouge grape originated in the Aosta Valley and migrated to the Valais region, where it is mainly cultivated.
Origin, origins & significance of the Humagne Rouge grape variety
This red grape variety originates from the neighboring Aosta Valley and found its way over the Great St. Bernard Pass to Valais in Switzerland at the beginning of the 20th century.
It is cultivated on 140 hectares of vineyards in Valais and Vaud. The name “Humagne Rouge” is significant as it reflects the unique characteristics and origin of this grape variety.
It belongs to a group of grape varieties that have survived in the Alpine regions of Italy and Valais.
This family also includes the Durize (Rouge de Fully), Eyholzer Rote, Goron de Bovernier and the white varieties Completer, Himbertscha, Humagne Blanc, Lafnetscha, Petit Arvine, Planscher and Resi. This robust grape variety produces a ruby-purple, tannic and powerful wine with a fruity bouquet of wild berries.
Its color is red to dark red with fiery reflections.
This is where Humagne Rouge gets its name “Hell’s wine”: flames seem to blaze in the wine glass, reinforcing the lively impression of this wine.
Characteristics of the Humagne Rouge grape: growth, ripeness and yield
It is one of the most demanding of all Valais vines and is characterized by its unique character.
The Humagne Rouge grapes ripen significantly later than all other grapes and are harvested no less than three weeks after the Fendant. The late-ripening variety, whose grapes are only planted on plots in the best locations, has now become a Valais showpiece wine and is one of the finest grape varieties.
The variety itself is quite high-yielding, and thanks to strict regulation, the typical concentration of fruit and tannins is achieved during vinification.

Taste profile of Humagne Rouge AOC Valais: Expressive fruit of black fruits, tree bark, lots of tannin and acidity
The Humagne Rouge AOC Valais is a red wine for connoisseurs that is drunk young at the peak of its fruit.
This is dominated by aromas of black cherries, blackcurrants and plums.
On the nose and palate, there is also a spicy note of pepper and cloves as well as herbal nuances that contribute to the complexity of this red wine.
The tannins in Humagne Rouge are often strong, which gives the wine the necessary structure and longevity.
When young, the wine may still appear somewhat taut and robust. The fruit is ripe on the palate and the wine itself is light and dry.
Flavors of undergrowth and tree bark are characteristic.
With its complex overall portfolio of aromas, Humagne Rouge AOC Valais is an excellent match for game dishes and cheese platters, and wines made from the Humagne Rouge berry still taste excellent even after several years of ageing and maturing in the bottle.
