Twice Swiss Winemaker of the Year, showered with gold diplomas at the most important wine competitions, admired by many, mistrusted by others: who is this Diego Mathier? We meet him in the Raspille vineyard in Salgesch, the first wine-growing village in the Upper Valais. The vines have been harvested. The foehn is tearing the last leaves from them. With a proud gesture, 41-year-old Mathier, a man of sturdy build, points to the four-hectare plots. They slope down towards the southwest like an amphitheater. The Pinot Noir for the Ambassadeur, which won a top spot in the big Pinot Noir tasting last month in the SonntagsZeitung, grows on their chalky soils.
