Adrian & Diego Mathier Nouveau Salquenen AG – this name has stood for top Valais wines for four generations. More than 600 years of tradition and wine history link the company to the wine village of Salgesch. The foundation stone for today’s wine business was laid by great-grandfather Ferdinand Mathier, a dedicated vineyard inspector who understood the importance of the soil, the vineyard location and the unique microclimate.
The company founder began cultivating Pinot Noir and the unique Cornalin grape variety, known in Valais since 1400, on the best sites in Salgesch, which had fallen into oblivion again somewhat in the 20th century. Over the decades, further outstanding cru sites were acquired from Salgesch to Chamoson. Today, the company owns 25 hectares of the best vineyards in the Rhone Valley. The cultivation of the different grape varieties can thus be carefully matched to the location. The traditional company, which is now run by Diego Mathier and his wife Nadia, sees viticulture as a harmonious interplay with nature and pays due respect to it. All vineyards are carefully cultivated according to the principles of integrated production. The result is top-quality wines that have earned the company a proud collection of medals, certificates and awards at national and international wine awards. In total, it has won over 350 prizes – the Ambassadeur from Mathier was even named the best Swiss Pinot Noir of the 2009 vintage.
