Honor
440 guests and wine lovers celebrated at the 2018 Swiss Wine Gala in Bern: Among them, of course, the 79 nominated wineries, which were awarded prizes in 13 categories.
The biggest success story was achieved by Valais winery owner Diego Mathier. This is the third time he has won the coveted title of Swiss Winery of the Year. The cellar master from Valais was also able to secure the Prix Vinissimo for white wines – the jury’s favorite white wine. The Prix Vinissimo red wine was won this year by the Uvavins – Cave de la CĂ´te winery in Tolochenaz, Vaud. The last special prize, Prix Bio, was won by Bertrand Favre from Domaine de Miolan in Choulex, Geneva.
The Grand Prix du Vin Suisse, jointly organized by the Vinea association and Vinum magazine, is and remains the largest tasting competition for Swiss wines. Once again this year, no fewer than 2867 wines from 525 producers were tasted. For six days, 158 specialists from all over the country tasted, evaluated and commented on wines from 19 different wine-growing cantons, as “Vinum” editor-in-chief Thomas Vaterlaus reported at the gala.
Of course, each wine region shone with its typical specialties, such as Ticino, which won all three prizes in the Merlot category.
Overall, however, the awards were well distributed across the country, the wine magazine reported. The largest wine region in Switzerland, Valais, made it onto the podium 15 times, followed by Vaud (seven times), German-speaking Switzerland (six times), the Three-Lakes Region (five times) and Ticino (four times).
Geneva producers are represented twice in the final ranking: Sarah Meylan-Favre from Cologny and her Gamay La Vigne Blanche 2017 shared first place with a wine from Vaud, while her spouse Bertrand Favre took third place in the Gamaret, Garanoir and Mara category with his Garanoir 2017 from Domaine de Miolan in Choulex.
