Since Diego Mathier and his wife Nadia took over the reins of the traditional family business, which is over 600 years old, his wines have been awarded over 350 gold medals worldwide. The first Swiss Winemaker of the Year is based in the sun-drenched wine village of Salgesch.
“Every wine is like a person: it has its own character that needs to be discovered. One or two characteristics are immediately apparent, but the wine only reveals certain traits after two or three glasses.” When you hear Diego Mathier talk about wine in this way, you can sense the passion and enthusiasm that the grapes arouse in the Valais native after just a few minutes. Striving for the perfect wine with the aim of providing his customers with incomparable moments of pleasure is the 42-year-old’s main motivation. Tradition, enjoyment, emotion and innovation are the pillars of the company philosophy and thus of the creative work at the winery.
Wine ambassador
Creative work paired with innovative ideas results in the Ambassadeur association, for example: With a certificate, customers become ambassadors for the wine of the same name, the “Ambassadeurs des Domaines Diego Mathier”. This was recently named the best Swiss red wine by the renowned Swiss Sunday newspaper. Thanks to the certificate, the ambassadors receive twelve bottles of this highly decorated wine every year exclusively and for life. In addition, every five years they are invited to an eventful celebration of the ambassador’s career.

Ambassadeur Fumé
Take this opportunity to discover the white counterpart to the Ambassadeur: the “Ambassadeur FumĂ©” undergoes a very special vinification process with maceration on the chilled mash and is then aged for nine months in barriques. With a fine woody note and a very fruity character, it impresses with its long, intense finish and is the ideal accompaniment to sea fish, shellfish and poultry.
