Winemaker of the year
Vinum, 11.11.2011 – Just over 41 years ago, a little boy was born in a remote mountain valley in Valais. The boy was immediately given a sip of Humagne Blanc, known locally as the “midwife’s wine”. Did he like the drink? He no longer knows! But it is now clear that this first sip was the start of a great winemaking career: Diego Mathier has already won more than 350 prizes at wine awards – in just ten years, since he took over the Nouveau Salquenen winery from his father in the fourth generation. One of his greatest triumphs was being named “Winemaker of the Year” in 2007 – now he has successfully repeated this feat by becoming Champion of Champions for the second time.
