Lunch with Diego Mathier
He arrived with a bit of a head start, his appetite whetted by the hour-long drive from Salgesch to Saint-Saphorin. Diego Mathier chose the Auberge de l’Onde in the heart of Lavaux to talk about his second title as Switzerland’s best winemaker – an award presented to him at the end of October in Bern by the Vinea association and Vinum magazine. This choice was determined by his stomach as much as his heart: He greatly appreciates chef Patrick Zimmermann’s cuisine and has developed a special relationship with the house sommelier, JĂ©rĂ´me AkĂ© BĂ©da.
At the end of May, the two men experienced an unusual adventure from afar. As JĂ©rĂ´me AkĂ© BĂ©da was just starting his evening service, he thought he recognized the famous American wine critic Robert Parker in the large dining room of the restaurant. He feverishly checked the reservation list – bingo: the name of the founder of the famous Parker guide was there in black and white.
