Ferdinand Mathier, Diego’s great-grandfather, once came across the grape. As an expert vine inspector, he brought valuable vineyards into the family’s possession. At the same time, he laid the foundations for the later wine empire by selling the fine wines through cisterns. “I may not have known my great-grandfather, but people often say that I am similar to him in character,” says Diego Mathier. Generations have come and gone. The philosophy has remained the same: Make the best wine you can and go one step further with each generation.
