Diego Mathier, successful winemaker from Salgesch and two-time “Winemaker of the Year”, is clear about his goals: “My wines should give people a lot of pleasure.”
You took over the Nouveau Salquenen winery from your father eleven years ago and have won more than 350 prizes at wine awards in this short time. What do you do better than other winemakers? Diego Mathier: We may not do it better, but we do it differently. We don’t take the grapes, vinify them and then make a wine. We turn the whole story around: For me, a wine is first created in my head. We ask ourselves what kind of wines we can make. Internally, we are also our biggest critics.
