White wine star
The good news first: Switzerland has a new world-class white wine! The bad news: it’s barely on the market and is sold out! It is the Ambassadeur des Domaines Diego Mathier 2013 from the winegrower of the same name from Salgesch. The amazing thing: This is the very first vintage of this wine. ‘The project had been around for a long time,’ says Mathier with a grin. ‘But I didn’t want to launch the white Ambassadeur until it was one hundred percent right for me. So we bickered about it for five years. The fifth attempt was the good one.” Incidentally, the world-class rating does not (just) come from BLICK. Mathier won the Regional Trophy for the best Swiss wine at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2015 with this wine, the results of which will be published at the beginning of June.
With his white assemblage, Mathier is the spearhead of Swiss wines that were invited to London for only the second time since 2014. Six Swiss wines were awarded gold at the world’s most prestigious competition with the highest-caliber jury – many Masters of Wines and Master Sommeliers – under the direction of Steven Spurrier. And the gold bar is higher in London than anywhere else, at 95 points. A full 90 points are needed for silver. Mathier also took gold for his Petite Arvine de Molignon 2013. The other top awards went to Didier Joris from Chamoson for his Amigne 2014 and three times to the Provins cooperative.
