The story of Lucifer
Before the earth came into being, God had created a great host of angels and archangels. One of them was called Michael, he was the fourth of seven archangels. Another was called Lucifer – the light bearer. Lucifer was chosen to guard the light before the throne of God. However, a group of angels around Lucifer rose up against God. They no longer wanted to serve him and proclaimed: “We ourselves are like God.” The archangel Michael became angry. He gathered the good angels around him and called out to Lucifer and his followers: “Who is like God?” A fierce battle ensued. Lucifer transformed himself into a dragon with seven heads and ten horns, sweeping away a third of the stars with his tail. The battle ended with Michael pushing his opponents to a precipice with his flaming sword and plunging down to earth. Since then, Lucifer – according to legend – has always wanted revenge. He does everything in his power to seduce people and thus separate them from God. The archangel Michael, however, is on the side of God-fearing people. As the “Prince of Light”, he is regarded as the protector of all Christians and the soul companion of the deceased. In reference to the battle with Lucifer, he is often depicted with a sword and lance – but also with a pair of scales. It is said that he uses them to weigh the souls of the deceased: their good and bad deeds. And it is said that both the devil and the Lord God still like to spend time in Valais.
