The most important facts in brief

  • Wine harvest 2023: Start on September 18, end on October 17, 2023.

  • Weather conditions: Over 60 liters of rain in mid-September; record temperatures afterwards led to a rapid decline in water content in the grapes.

  • Quality potential: First impressions of the tastings indicate a vintage of the century, comparable to 1911, 1929, 1947 and 1982.

  • Special feature 2023: Similar to 1947 – rain at the beginning of the harvest, followed by temperatures between 25-35 °C in October, resulting in particularly concentrated grapes.

Vintage 2023 will be a vintage of the century

2023 vintage has the potential to be the vintage of the century

The first fermented juices from the 2023 harvest are already ready for a first quality tasting by Diego Mathier and cellar master Cédric Leyat. This year’s harvest began on September 18 and ended on October 17, 2023.

It was a challenging and atypical wine year in 2023.

In mid-September, there was over 60 liters of rainfall in the Valais vineyards just before the start of the harvest. This meant that the berries were soaked with water, but at the same time there was a great risk of rot spreading if the harvest was delayed.

Nevertheless, Diego opted for the riskier option and waited with the grape harvest. Fortunately, the weather cooperated and brought record temperatures in the following weeks. As a result, the berries quickly lost the water they had absorbed, resulting in a concentrate that is unparalleled in the Mathier family era.

The first tastings already show that the 2023 vintage will join the great vintages of the last 120 years. These include the 1911, 1929, 1947 and 1982 vintages. In the 1947 vintage of the century, the weather conditions were similar to this year. There was a lot of rain at the beginning of the harvest and temperatures of 25 to 35 °C were recorded in October.

The juices from the 2023 vintage in Adrian & Diego Mathier’s wine cellar undoubtedly have great potential.
