Diego Mathier was named Winemaker of the Year at the Grand Prix du Vin Suisse in Bern – for the third time after 2007 and 2017.
Diego Mathier from Valais was named Winemaker of the Year on Thursday evening in Bern at the 12th edition of the Grand Prix du Vin Suisse. The winemaker from Salgesch (VS) won this award for the third time after 2007 and 2011.
The Nouveau Salquenen winery also won the Vinissimo blanc prize, which is awarded to the best white wine in the competition, as the organizers announced in a press release. Uvavins-Cave de la CĂ´te in Tolochenaz (VD) was chosen as the best red wine. Among the other awards, the organic prize went to Domaine de Miolan in Choulex (GE).
At an evening event in the Kursaal Bern, attended by 440 guests, 39 wines were chosen in the 13 categories of the competition. Here, too, Diego Mathier took the top places, particularly in the assemblages: 1st and 2nd place in the red wines, 1st and 3rd in the white wines.
Of the regions represented, Valais was on the winners’ podium 15 times, followed by the canton of Vaud (7 times), German-speaking Switzerland (6), the Three Lakes region (5), Ticino (4) and Geneva (2).
The Grand Prix du Vin Suisse, which is co-organized by the VINEA association and the magazine Vinum, is the largest tasting competition for Swiss wines, as the organizers emphasized. They pointed out that last June in Sierre, 2867 wines from 525 producers were tasted by 158 specialists. A ten-member international jury then drew up a final ranking list in August. (nxp/ats)
