Nowhere in Switzerland is as much wine produced as in Valais. Where there are a lot of vines, there is also a lot of work. Unfortunately, the profession of winegrower has long suffered from an image problem. Hard work for a poor wage – that’s what many people think. And that’s why only three young people have started an apprenticeship this year. That’s too few for so many vines – Valais simply lacks winegrowers.

Traditionally, many family businesses have set the tone in Valais viticulture. Diego Mathier’s winery in Salgesch is one of the best known in the country. The declining number of apprentices gives the multiple award-winning winemaker of the year pause for thought. However, Diego Mathier does not have to worry about his own succession: He has five daughters and all of them are interested in the wine industry.
