The most important facts at a glance
The variety, which is often incorrectly referred to as Humagne Blanche, originates from Valais, where it was first mentioned in documents in 1313 as Vinum humanum and also as Humagny.
Due to its high iron content (three times as much as other wines), this white wine has earned the nickname “wine for women who have recently given birth”.
From around 1815, Humagne blanc is said to have been included in the midwives’ luggage and poured to the new mothers to strengthen them.
Presumably, however, one or two nervous fathers have also benefited from this wine.
The Humagne Blanc and Humagne rouge grape varieties are genealogically identical in the first part of their names, but not related to each other.
Origin, origins & significance of the Humagne Blanc grape variety
This white grape variety originates from Valais in Switzerland and is only found in this canton, making it an autochthonous grape variety.
It occupies 26 hectares of vineyards in Valais.
It was first mentioned in a document in January 1313 in the so-called register of Anniviers, not far from Sion, the capital of the Valais canton.
Derived from the Latin vinum humanum, which means “a wine that is healthy for humans“, the fact that this wine contains three times the amount of iron as other wines as well as an increased amount of calcium is also said to have contributed to it becoming standard equipment for midwives as early as the 12th century and being given the additional nickname “wine for women in childbed”.
Characteristics of the Humagne Blanc grape: growth, ripeness and yield
The grape variety is very sensitive and requires the best possible care from the winegrower.
Even in good hillside locations, the variety only produces a low yield and is also quite susceptible to powdery mildew and rot.
The ageing potential is considerable and offers wine lovers delicate white wines with extremely pleasing flavors.
Humagne Blanc and its synonyms
The fact that only a handful of synonyms are known for this wine proves that it is an autochthonous grape variety.
The synonyms are: Humagne, Humagne Blanche, Miousap, Miousat and Mioussat.
